Background: Lippincott Williams and Wilkins (LWW) is a global publisher of medical, nursing, and allied health information in book, journal, newsletter, looseleaf, and electronic media formats. LWW is a unit of Wolters Kluwer International Health & Science, a leading global provider of authoritative information and services in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, science, and related areas. In early 2001, a corporate initiative was chartered to begin to review and make recommendations on the processes used to manage both book and journal content. This initiative became known as the Content Digitization Warehouse Working Group (CDWWG). It was decided that the first step in managing content required a complete content inventory that detailed how that content was organized and prepared for its ultimate delivery points.
Strategy: Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (LWW) is a global publisher of medical, nursing, and allied health information in book, journal, newsletter, looseleaf, and electronic media formats.
Result: Really Strategies and LWW's Business Process Reengineering Group composed a two-part Content Organization findings report that suggested guidelines for restructuring journal content to accommodate a modular set of DTDs. Journal editors and publishers welcomed the proposed changes and are now in the process of implementation. Additionally, the team produced a five-part Content Preparation Plan that detailed how to organize, prepare, and manage content based on quality assurance checkpoints. Quality was defined as the ability to meet marketing and technical requirements as indicated by LWW's internal business drivers.
"Really Strategies immediately understood the importance of managing delivery-neutral content in today's publishing world. Additionally, they recognized the diversity of our content collection and provided a framework based on quality assurance goals. They worked with our internal staff to identify tasks and tools that would enable all content handlers reach their specific goals."
