Multiple System Integration to Support Subscription Web Site

Editorial Projects in Education

Background: Editorial Projects in Education Inc. (EPE) publishes Education Week and Teacher Magazine, and produces the award-winning edweek.org and AgentK-12.org. EPE's primary mission is to help raise the level of awareness and understanding among professionals and the public of important issues in American education. Really Strategies helped EPE transition www.edweek.org to a subscription-based site. The project required the integration of multiple systems (access control, fulfillment, web CMS platform) and management and coordination of multiple vendors.

Strategy: Really Strategies worked together with EPE's internal team and a number of external vendors on edweek.org's migration to a partially-paid subscription site. Really Strategies developed detailed page flows for the user experience and architected and coordinated the data flow process and system integration between systems including eMeta's eRights Suite and Kable News Company's fulfillment services. These two systems had to seamlessly integrate online subscriptions with EPE's print fulfillment system. Really Strategies was able to translate business requirements to a technology solution in a complex, multivendor environment and implement the design successfully on an Open Source-based Web platform.

Result: By moving to a subscription model for access to premium online content, EPE is recapturing subscription revenue lost from print subscriptions, building a new base of online-only subscriptions, all while still supporting a strong base for web advertising revenue. The successful launch of the subscription-based site has

  • Met EPE's business needs (e.g., integrating subscription management for both online and print subscriptions, implementing auto-renewal, providing ability for existing print subscribers to easily claim free online subscriptions)
  • Facilitated the successful subscription information flows between edweek.org; eMeta; Kable; Yesmail, EPE's e-newsletter management provider; and Fry Communications for print distribution
  • Integrated tools for customer service to easily maintain individual online subscriptions and site licenses

"Really Strategies was a critical partner in the successful launch of our paid content site. They were attentive to both high-level strategy and user experience as well to all the details of implementation. I admire their ability to think strategically and to be the kind of consultants who 'roll-up-their-sleeves' to help get the job done."

Michele Givens, general manager, EPE
