Workflow/Process Analysis

Background: Lippincott Williams and Wilkins (LWW) is a global publisher of medical, nursing, and allied health information in book, journal, newsletter, looseleaf, and electronic media formats. LWW is a unit of Wolters Kluwer International Health & Science, a leading global provider of authoritative information and services in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, science, and related areas. In early 2001, a corporate initiative was chartered to begin to review and make recommendations on the processes used to manage both book and journal content. This initiative became known as the Content Digitization Warehouse Working Group (CDWWG).

Solution: LWW commissioned Really Strategies to complete a representative sampling of book and journal process/workflows, analyze the resulting flows, and identify areas of improvement. This effort included interviews with executives, directors, publishers, and production staff at offices in Philadelphia, PA, Springhouse, PA, New York, NY, Baltimore, MD, and London, UK.

Result: Really Strategies created 19 detailed workflow diagrams encompassing book and journal production activities. In addition, each workflow and process diagram was analyzed and the resultant findings were captured in a companion analysis report that identified areas for improvement and recommended corrective actions. Finally, Really Strategies developed and presented their findings to the Content Digitization Warehouse Working Group.
