Digital Repository Assessment—A Phased Approach to Developing and Storing Electronic Content
Background: The Jewish Publication Society is the oldest publisher of Jewish titles in the English language. Their mission is to enhance Jewish culture by promoting the dissemination of religious and secular works of exceptional quality, in the United States and abroad, to all individuals and institutions interested in past and contemporary Jewish life.
Solution: The Jewish Publication Society hired Really Strategies to assess its digital repository objectives and provide a phased approach to reaching those desired goals. The current publishing environment at the Jewish Publication Society does not have the capabilities to repurpose, store, and distribute content in electronic format. The Society recognizes the value a digital repository would bring to its publishing initiatives but was unclear the direction to take to reach these goals and maintain the publishing budget. Really Strategies' first-hand knowledge and experience with helping publishers' transition to XML-based repositories was a natural fit for both parties.
Result: Really Strategies conducted a high-level analysis to determine a sensible and phased approach to help the Jewish Publication Society meet its objectives for developing electronic content. Really Strategies helped the Jewish Publication Society determine the primary business drivers for electronic content and phrase these drivers in such a way that key stakeholders understand the importance of this initiative. Next, Really Strategies presented a three-phased approach that is based on the publisher's primary business objectives while offering opportunities for return on investment as a result of each phase.
