K4 XML Export Transformation

Atlantic Media

Background: Atlantic Media publishes The Atlantic, National Journal and Government Executive magazines, as well as CongressDaily, The Hotline, Technology Daily, NationalJournal.com, The Almanac of American Politics and The Capital Source. The Atlantic has implemented the K4 publishing system and updated its production environment, which included transitioning from Adobe CS1 to Adobe CS2 and developing new print styles and templates. The Atlantic hired Really Strategies to create an automated process that extracts content from the K4 system and delivers it to its current web site and to other licensors.

Strategy: Really Strategies developed a transformation process that automatically creates HTML from Atlantic Media's K4 export process. To avoid manual content tagging during the production process, Really Strategies developed a mapping from InCopy styles to XML tags, and set up K4 to export the XML. Really Strategies crafted an XSLT script that transforms K4's exported XML into HTML, which is delivered directly to its web site. The export includes metadata as well as the content markup, an important aspect that facilitates content usage downstream in the production process.

Result: The final exported HTML matches the content requirements for The Atlantic's current web site. The updated transformation process allows Atlantic's staff to streamline content processing for their web site and lays the groundwork for its long-term objective of planning for a new web CMS by identifying important content transformation considerations.

"While the K4 workflow tool provides many benefits, the most easily measured labor savings comes from marking up pages for web and print production simultaneously. Really Strategies' XML-exporter transformation is a key component of this process." Nathan Newton, Publishing Technologies Manager, Atlantic Media Company
